WTF WTF Laws: fact or Fic

Yeah, No offense to the FBI, and I am sure they have enough to deal with but turns out there some crazy and hilarious and just plain WTF laws that you didn't realize were a thing.  Turns out those some of them aren't but some actually are.  From pushing a moose from an airplane 😕 to not getting a raise 💸because of your hairstyle.

Well here we go Yippee Ki Yay MoFos

Yeah I went there, No I don't own the rights and blah blah blah...

I will start off simple, simple like knowing your own State's name, simple, right?  Apparently not for Arkansasians (is that a word?) Well I hope so because otherwise I could be breaking this first law on the list.
1. Arkansas: must pronounce state name correctly
Fact, I don't know if you will go to jail but it is a real law that is still on the books.

Arkansas: Must pronounce state name correctly. Visitors beware: it is strictly prohibited to pronounce “Arkansas” incorrectly.

That is right according to Arkansas Secretary of State, Cole Jester, says in the article in link below about how Arkansas got its name. During the early days of statehood, Arkansas’ two U.S. Senators were divided on the spelling and pronunciation. One was always introduced as the senator from “ARkanSAW” and the other as the senator from “Ar-KANSAS”. In 1881, the state’s General Assembly passed resolution 1-4-105 declaring that the state’s name should be spelled “Arkansas” but pronounced “Arkansaw”.

The pronunciation preserves the memory of the Indians who were the original inhabitants of our state, while the spelling clearly dictates the nationality of French adventurers who first explored this area.

On to the Land of Milk and Honey, Yup that's right good 'Ol California.  There are quite a few weird laws in California one of which is landing right here at number two on my list of WTF laws.

2. Turns out it is illegal to whistle for a lost canary before 7am

Fact

Crazy right, especially if you are a canary owner, I know as a dog and cat owner myself that a lost pot can be heart pounding but best make sure if you are going to lose a Canary you do it After & am .

According to the link below 'In Berkeley, California, it is illegal to whistle for a lost canary before 7am' find this and a few more from the wonderful CA at

https://www.jlegal.org/blog/californias-top-10-weirdest-laws-you-will-be-mind-blown/

Do your feet get cold at night?  Mine do, sometimes I wear two pairs of fuzzy socks, well heading over to North Dakota you may want to check the laws before falling asleep in certain footwear bring us to this next WTF law.

3. In North Dakota, it is illegal to fall asleep with your shoes on.

Fiction

No, it is not true that it's illegal to fall asleep with your shoes on in North Dakota. While some sources claim this, it's a widely circulated misconception. There's no such law in North Dakota's legal code. The idea likely originated from a misinterpretation or a humorous take on the state's history, possibly involving "strangest laws" compilations.

Alright weirdo and weirdettes lets head over to Baltimore, As a clean OCD freak myself I am not sure that this next law would work for me and cannot wait to find out the reason, bring us to number four WTF law is Baltimore, Maryland with...

4. ‘In Baltimore, Maryland, it is illegal to scrub your sink’

Fiction

After the stove has been scraped, the floors are shining and the dishes have been put away, the logical conclusion is to give your sink a clean. However, in Baltimore, this seemingly innocent act is a violation of the law and counts as pollution as most of the drains enter directly into Chesapeake Bay. Now when looking more into this law to find out the reasoning it is shown that the law is actually just an act of humor and actually stems from Urban Legend according to an AI Overview it was concluded iIn reality, there is no law in Baltimore or Maryland that prohibits scrubbing a sink. It's a humorous, albeit inaccurate, tidbit of information that has been perpetuated as fact.

Since we are in the spring cleaning mood, lets move on to Arizona where they hold a "dumb law" having to do with a bathtub and a ... Donkey

5. In Arizona Donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs.

Fiction

So a lot like the Fourth law on my list the law prohibiting donkeys from sleeping in bathtubs in Arizona is a myth. There is no actual legal prohibition against this activity. The story likely originated from a fictional account or a misunderstanding of existing laws, according to CaseMine and Enjuris.

While the story of a donkey being rescued from a bathtub after a dam break is popular, it's not a verified account of a law being passed due to that incident. The law is likely an urban legend or a fabricated story, not an actual legal provision, according to Oxplore | The Home of Big Questions. But it's still a funny "fact " to tell to your friends.

________________________________________________________________________

We are now headed back to Arkansas, Did I say that right?  I take personal offense to this little rule that brings up number Six on WTF laws.

6. In Arkansas A law provides that school teachers who bob their hair will not get a raise.

From everything that I have researched I cannot find a way to disprove this law except that in the way of confirming it, it is said that the hair cut is found offense.

________________________________________________________________________

keeping on the subject of teachers and learning this next law is one of the most known songs in, well, probably everywhere.  The A, B, Cs'

7.In Topeka, Kansas it is illegal to sing the alphabet out on the street at night.

Fact ( Technically)

Yes, the claim that it's illegal to sing the alphabet out on the street at night in Topeka, Kansas is true.

A Facebook post from the Highway 99 Blues Club notes that a Topeka ordinance prohibits "yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on the public streets, particularly between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.".

This is because such activities can annoy or disturb the peace of residents. While the ordinance doesn't specifically mention the alphabet, it does prohibit singing on the streets at night, reports the Kansan.com.

Imagine out of nowhere, a slew of police cars arrive and arrest you on sight. You are left scratching your head and contemplating your new criminal record all because it is illegal to sing your ABC's at night in the city of Topeka. These unusual laws are not isolated incidents. There are many other weird laws in Kansas.

I absolutely love the next law as we head over to Oklahoma and Ohio.  I am a dog momma and even I mess this law up sometimes, but I wont in these states anymore. HeHe

8.   Oklahoma and Ohio: You can't make faces at a dog.

Fiction {kinda}

Yes, the statement is generally true, though not technically a law in the strictest sense. In Oklahoma, making "ugly faces" at a dog could result in a fine or jail time. Ohio goes further, making it against the law to make any kind of face at a dog, whether ugly or not, which could also lead to fines or jail time.

Here's why it's not a strict law and why the situation is more nuanced:

Oklahoma:

While there isn't a formal law specifically prohibiting making faces at dogs, the law was interpreted by some to mean that making "ugly faces" could be considered animal cruelty, as it could distress or harm the animal. This interpretation is not universally agreed upon, and some argue it is overly broad and would be difficult to enforce.

Ohio:

Similarly, while Ohio may not have a specific law directly prohibiting making faces at dogs, the principle of animal welfare could be invoked to argue against actions that cause undue distress or harm. Again, this would depend on the specific circumstances and interpretation of the law.

In summary, while there isn't a straightforward, codified law prohibiting making faces at dogs in these states, the potential for fines or jail time exists under the interpretation of existing animal welfare laws, particularly regarding animal cruelty.

Lets move next to another animal we are all familiar with, the jumpy slimy and depending on who you ask, cute frogs.

9.California: It's illegal to eat a frog if it died during a frog-jumping competition.

Fact (weirdest fact, maybe)

Yes, it is true. In California, it is illegal to eat a frog that has died during a frog-jumping contest. The California Fish and Game Code specifies that if a frog dies or is killed in a contest, it must be destroyed and cannot be used for any purpose, including consumption.

Any person may possess any number of live frogs to use in frog-jumping contests, but if such a frog dies or is killed, it must be destroyed as soon as possible, and may not be eaten or otherwise used for any purpose.

On to Alabama, this has to be one of the funniest and most Obvious laws I have ever heard of.  I love that they feel the need to put it into writing though.

10.Alabama: It's illegal to drive while blindfolded.

Fact

Yes, it is illegal to drive while blindfolded in Alabama.

While it may seem obvious, Alabama has a specific law, possibly stemming from someone actually attempting this, making it illegal to drive with your vision obscured.

This falls under the broader category of obstruction of driver's view and control, which is prohibited under Alabama law.

Even though this law might seem unnecessary, it serves as a reminder that operating a vehicle requires a clear and unobstructed view of the road and surroundings to ensure safe driving practices.

Into Delaware, let me just say do we not have freedom of body 👀.Okay I am kidding but as a sister to someone with a prosthetic limb, I found this quite tummy tickling.

11.Delaware: It's against the law for a pawnbroker to accept an artificial limb or wheelchair as payment.

Fact

Yes, it is true. In Delaware, it is illegal for a pawnbroker to accept an artificial limb or wheelchair as payment or a pledge. The Delaware Code explicitly prohibits this practice. This law is part of the regulations governing pawnshops in the state, aiming to protect individuals from the potential exploitation of essential mobility aids, according to The News Journal.

Going on to Louisiana, I am guessing that this law was made before women were respected with equals.

12.Louisiana: It's illegal for a woman to drive a car without her husband waving a flag in front of it beforehand.

Fiction (Thank Goodness )

No, the claim that it's illegal for a woman to drive a car in Louisiana without her husband waving a flag in front of it is a false statement. While it's true that this law was once part of Louisiana law, it's not currently enforced and is considered a humorous or antiquated legal quirk, according to several sources like BuzzFeed https://www.buzzfeed.com/rhiannacampbell/weird-old-american-laws-you-wont-believe, Stuckey's https://stuckeys.com/the-weirdest-driving-laws-in-every-state/, and Morris Bart, LLC. This law, which required a husband to wave a flag in front of his wife's car before she could drive, was likely a relic of a time when women's rights were more limited and the automobile was a relatively new invention.

While the specific law about the flag is not currently enforceable, there are other quirky laws in Louisiana, such as restrictions on certain types of parading, throwing beads at Mardi Gras, and even specific rules about vampires. It's important to remember that not all stories about "weird laws" are factual and it's always a good idea to verify the information before accepting it as true.

I am a homeowner but this next law from Maine certainly cracks me up.

13.Maine: It's illegal to bite your landlord.

Fact (unsurprisingly)

Yep, you either get lucky with your landlord or you land a really bad catch. But no matter how much they make you grind your teeth, it's illegal to bite your landlord in Rumford, Maine.

I mean come on now as much as you may not like your landlord we should definitely not bite them or well, anyone for that matter.

Minnesota must have some hangry people... if this were true.

14.Minnesota: It's illegal to eat hamburgers on a Sunday.

Fiction

No, (better not be bruh)

it is not true that it is illegal to eat hamburgers on Sundays in Minnesota. This is a common misconception and a piece of folklore, not a legal fact. There are no laws in Minnesota (or any other state) restricting what food you can eat on a specific day of the week.

The rumor likely originated in St. Cloud, Minnesota, but it has been debunked by legal experts and is not supported by any existing or former state statutes. It's a good example of a "blue law" myth, where certain activities are falsely believed to be banned on Sundays.

____________________________________________________________________________

Onto Michigan where we feel the need to specify certain animal laws, then we will head to a few more states with some more fun animal laws.

15.Michigan: It's illegal to tie a crocodile or alligator to a fire hydrant.

Fact

{Please for the love of all things holy, DO NOT do this!}

Yes, it is generally understood that in Michigan, it is illegal to tie an alligator or crocodile to a fire hydrant. This is often cited as an example of a "dumb law" or quirky legal oddity. While the law doesn't specifically mention "alligators" or "crocodiles," it prohibits tying any animal to a fire hydrant.

I would hope that this is generally understood everywhere but what do I know.

____________________________________________________________________________

16.Georgia: It's illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp.

Fact

so for anyone who might have a pet giraffe around or if the circus is in town, you better not tie them up to a telephone pole or a streetlamp in Atlanta because it's against the law.

Yes, it is true. In Atlanta, Georgia, it is illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp. This is just one of the many unusual laws on the books in the state, some of which are considered "quirky" or "dumb".

Chickens, llamas and giraffes, oh my! These are some of the ...

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Specific to Atlanta?

The law specifically prohibits tying a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp in Atlanta.

Part of a Larger Collection:

This law is often listed among other unusual or obscure Georgia laws, like the one about not being able to say "Oh, boy" in Jonesboro.

This is considered a quirky or odd law, often used as an example of the unusual laws found in many states.

Not universally applicable:

While this particular law about giraffes is specific to Atlanta, other, similar laws may exist in other areas or states.

____________________________________________________________________________

17.New Jersey: It's illegal to purchase ice cream after 6 p.m.

Fiction (I would hope it isn't true)

No, it is not true that New Jersey has a law prohibiting the purchase of ice cream after 6 p.m. While some sources may mention this as a strange law, it appears to be a misnomer or exaggeration. The real law in Newark, New Jersey, is that ice cream businesses with outdoor seating for 20 or more customers must have a security guard on duty after 4 p.m. This is not a ban on ice cream sales, but a requirement to ensure public safety in crowded areas, according to a website specializing in criminal law.

____________________________________________________________________________

18.Alaska: It's illegal to push a moose out of a moving airplane.

Fact

Literally why is this photo a thing!

Honestly though should you ever push anything out of an airplane?  I don't know I guess if you lack common sense just know it's illegal.

While nobody probably would try to push a moose out of a moving airplane, it is still illegal nonetheless. This is one of those laws where you wonder what exactly happened to prompt such an oddly specific law. The jury's still out on whether it is legal to give the moose a shove if the airplane is not moving, though!

____________________________________________________________________________

Leave it to Florida with law number 19.

19.Florida: It's illegal to fart in public after 6 p.m.

Fiction

No, it is not true that it is illegal to fart in public after 6 p.m. in Florida. While there are some quirky laws in Florida, the one about flatulence after a certain time is a myth. It's a humorous urban legend, but there's no such law on the books.

Wouldn't be a bad idea though, am I right?

____________________________________________________________________________

More cute animals in Massachusetts.

20.It’s against the law to let a gorilla ride in the back of your car in Massachusetts.

Fiction (but I wouldn't advise, also WHY DO YOU HAVE A DAMN GORRILLA?)

No, it is not true that it is against the law to have a gorilla in the backseat of your car in Massachusetts. While the state does have laws regarding animal transport, they primarily focus on ensuring animals are secured and protected in vehicle cargo areas, not specifically prohibiting gorillas. The misconception likely stems from a misunderstanding of the law, which mentions "animal" but doesn't explicitly mention gorillas.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

No specific gorilla law:

Massachusetts does not have a law that specifically forbids having a gorilla in the backseat of a car.

Focus on cargo area transport:

The law primarily addresses the transport of animals in the cargo area of vehicles (like trucks) and requires them to be enclosed, secured, or otherwise protected.

Misinterpretation:

The misconception likely arises from reading only part of the law and assuming it applies to all animals, including gorillas, in any part of the vehicle.
